Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Morley Library Children's Summer Reading Program?
Every summer, Morley Library runs a reading program for children ages birth through entering 7th grade. This summer looks a little different because of social distancing due to COVID-19, but we think it's more important than ever to encourage your child to read at home over the summer to develop a lifelong love of reading and the library and maintain reading levels while school is out. The Children's Summer Reading Program runs for 4 weeks from Monday, July 6th through Friday, July 31st. Children are encouraged to read or be read to or with every day for at least 20 minutes. Each day of reading then counts as an entry into the prize drawing at the end of the program.
How do I sign up my child for the Summer Reading Program?
Registration for the 2020 Children's Summer Reading Program is 100% online. Simply click here to access the REGISTRATION FORM and fill out the questions to sign up your child. You'll need to fill out a separate entry for each child that you sign up. That's it!
Do I need to have a Morley Library card or does my child need a Morley Library card to participate in the Children's Summer Reading Program?
No! Of course we recommend that everyone have a library card, but we do not require participants to have a Morley Library card. CLEVNET is currently working on enabling online registration for digital library cards, so stay tuned for more details. For more information about obtaining a Morley Library card, click here.
Does my child need to live in Painesville (zip code 44077) to participate in the Morley Library Children's Summer Reading Program?
No--Morley Library allows children from all over Ohio to participate in the Children's Summer Reading Program. It is not required to live in Painesville.
Is there a paper Reading Log that I need to use?
We recommend printing this PAPER READING LOG to help keep track of your child's reading during the summer. It isn't required, but many children are motivated by a visual progress report that tracks their hard work! There is no need to show the paper reading log at the Library. All reading progress will be tracked by you in the weekly online Reading Logs above.
What books can my child read?
We understand that right now is a difficult time to access print books. Any reading that your child does or you do with your child counts towards your child's 20 minute daily reading goal. It can be print books that you have already checked out from Morley Library, books that you own at home, books from a Little Free Library, books you borrow from a friend -- you name it! Ebooks and eaudiobooks count too! Morley Library has a vast digital book collection that can be accessed through several different platforms. You can use your Morley Library or CLEVNET card to access our digital collections here:
What if I missed the start date of the Summer Reading Program?
No worries at all! Registration for the Morley Library Children's Summer Reading Program is ongoing from the beginning of the program on Monday, July 6th through the last day on Friday, July 31st. We simply ask that you start tracking your child's reading on the day that you sign up. As long as you log at least ONE day of reading or being read to for a minimum of 20 minutes, your child will be entered into the Prize Drawing at the end of the Summer Reading Program. Every day that your child reads or is read to is an entry into the Prize Drawing, so the sooner you sign up, the more chances your child will have to win a prize!
How does the Prize Drawing work?
When you fill out the weekly online Reading Logs for your child, you will choose the prize that your child would prefer to win for the entries that week. All days of reading logged in that week's Reading Log entry will be submitted as individual entries into the Prize Drawing to try to win the prize that you chose. You can log your child's days of reading into the online Reading Logs once per week. The MAXIMUM number of entries of Days of Reading into the Prize Drawing is 26 if you registered your child on the first day of the Summer Reading Program. That is the total number of days that the Children's Summer Reading Program runs from July 6th through July 31st.
When will I be contacted if my child won a prize in the Summer Reading Program?
The Prize Drawing will take place the week after the Summer Reading Program ends. Winners do NOT need to be present at the drawing. All winners will be contacted by phone the first week of August and prizes will either be available for pick-up at the library or winners can choose to have their prize mailed to them.
