OBITUARIES

The indexes to death notices appearing in the Painesville Telegraph, from 16 July 1822 to 30 April 1986, and in the News-Herald (Willoughby), 25 March 1986 to the present, can be found in the Genealogy and Local History Room. Also included are obituaries from the Northern Ohio Journal (Painesville), 11 July 1874 to 26 June 1880; the Painesville Republican, 1898 to 1906; and the Willoughby Gazette, 1 October 1868 to 25 September 1869.

NOTE: Morley Library does not have microfilm for all the newspapers in this index, specifically the Painesville Republican and various editions of the Painesville Telegraph [covering a time period of about 1892 to 1906].

There is a charge of $1.00 per sheet of paper or $1.00 per electronic file. An invoice for your copies will be included in the mailing or electronic file. Please do not prepay. Note some obituaries can not be supplied as an electronic file.
Please limit your requests to four (4) individuals at a time.

Cleveland Public Library has two tools to help locate death notices and obituaries. One is the Cleveland Necrology File, an online database of Cleveland area death notices from circa 1850 to 1975. The other is the Cleveland News Index. This includes entries in the Cleveland Press and the Cleveland Plain Dealer from 1976 to the present.

For Ashtabula County area the Ashtabula County District Library has an online index covering 1816 to the present. "The emphasis of this resource is to compile local obituaries from the past few decades. This index is not comprehensive and definitive."
