GPAL Council: Sharing Resources through collaboration for a common purpose: Strengthening family literacy.

Our Mission

The Greater Painesville Area Literacy Council realizes the importance of literacy awareness for all families. Literacy awareness and understanding are keys to a successful academic experience for children and families.  Early literacy intervention is key to building literacy skills. Development and continued implementation of effective literacy programs for families is essential.

Therefore, the mission of the Greater Painesville Area Literacy Council requires our partners to share common resources, collaborate and engage parents in the process of family literacy.

Our Goals and Objectives

The Greater Painesville Area is defined as: Painesville City, Painesville Township, Concord, Leroy, and Grand River.

Families will be defined as parents and caregivers with children ages birth through age twelve years old. All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver for participation in center activities.

All tutoring and literacy activities will be focused on helping children and parents work together on literacy skills and literacy enrichment in the home, in the center, in the library and at school by:

  1. Reaching out to families in the Morley Library service area in need of literacy support
    • Provide information to the community about services available through the agencies of each collaborator.
    • Collaborators will provide information and speakers to other agencies and area organizations.
  1. Providing a friendly and welcoming space for programs and service
    • The Center space will be open during library hours when staffing is available.
    • The Center will have child/adult friendly seating, activities and learning toys for use during programming and tutoring.
    • The Center will provide an on-staff coordinator during operational hours
  1. Providing early literacy information, encouragement and activities
    • Early Literacy Programs will be provided for parents
    • Parents will learn activities and skills to support literacy at home
    • Families will be encouraged to become life-long learners and library users by becoming familiar with Morley Library programs and services.
  1. Providing trained staff for testing, instruction and literacy type play
    • Tutors and all center staff will be trained in the skills needed to use the equipment and materials provided by the center.
    • Tutors and staff will also be trained in the use of Morley Library materials.
    • Appointments will be made for testing and literacy tutoring upon request for any family using Morley Library services.
  1. Providing a one-stop center for family literacy needs and literacy support needs
    • Each collaborating agency will provide contact information, services provided at their agency and in the center.
    • Outside agencies that support the mission and goals of the center will also have contact information and service brochures provided by that agency in the center.
